Electrical Safety Tips  04/19/06 9:57:52 AM

Louisiana weather is unpredictable. Sudden storms and high winds appear without much warning and may cause downed power lines. Never touch down or broken power lines  whether they are insulated or not.

If an overhead power line falls on or near your car, stay inside. Do not touch any metal and have someone notify VEMCO immediately.

Power lines run through rural and wooded areas. Hunters should not use power lines and equipment for "target practice."

Farm and logging equipment such as cotton pickers, combines, log trucks, etc. can become energized and cause serious injury or death if they come in contact with overhead power lines.

Antennas are cumbersome and hard to control. They can easily fall or be blown against nearby power lines. Before you erect a radio or television antenna, contact VEMCO for advice and assistance.

Metal, metal-reinforced or wet ladders that you might use around your home or other buildings are conductors of electricity. Use extreme caution when using these types of ladders around service drops and electrical wires and equipment.

Consider all power lines dangerous. Keep objects a safe distance away from all overhead power lines. Do not attempt to raise or move electric lines! Call VEMCO. If power lines are buried let VEMCO locate them or call the Louisiana One Call Center (1-800-272-3020 or #DIG on any cell phone) before digging. Do not allow children or pets to play or dig around underground transformers or pedestals.

Report any potential power line hazard to Valley Electric.
